There are only four days left in this year!!

I'll leave Tokyo to escape from the stress of daily life and
to make clean riddance of my concern for a while.


There's nothing I can do about my problems,
so I might as well go with the flow next year.

I Found The Reason Why The Mona Lisa is So Popular Around the World

 




"It's hard to understand what her countenance shows. 
That's why we are attracted by the Mona Lisa."


My friend said that, but I didn't think that it was the only reason that explains why she is so famous.
I had never understood its attraction.
Listening to the explanation from an interpreter at the Louvre,
I  finally understood why. The following is what I learned.

When Leonardo da Vinci was 65 years old, he moved from Italy to Paris,
and only brought with him three important paintings.
One of them was the Mona Lisa, shrouded in mystery even to this day.
In fact, most artworks works that we call masterpieces are still veiled in mystery.
That's why they became famous. (ah, I got it!)
There are so many hypotheses about the model used for the Mona Lisa.

What He Didn't Need to Tell

When I was a freshman at university, I was so excited to study new languages.

At the first Italian class, the Italian teacher said,
"When we talk together with people who are from many different countries,
we end up speaking English. So I think the most important language is English."

The semester had already started at that time and I couldn't change the course.
I had to learn Italian with such low motivation for two years
so I can't remember anything I learnt at all.

Farewell Party :(

My close friend has to move to very far  away at the end of this month.

I cooked many dishes and baked a chocolate cake for her farewell party. 

 

I usually don't curl the croissant's dough tidily so some cheese always spills out, but this croissant is always popular with my guests. (*^-ﾟ)vｨｪｨ♪


I had yet to decorate a Christmas tree with ornaments so I decorated it in a hurry before my friends came. (･o･*)=3 ﾌｰｩｰ
I often hung out with her and another close friend. I'll miss her....

Earthquakes Frequently Occur in Japan

Earthquakes frequently occur these days.
Because of that, I think my senses for detecting an earthquake have become less sharp than before.

I sometimes notice an earthquake by looking at when the light hanging from the ceiling starts swaying.

The alert system of my apartment immediately warns us with the loud sounds when any earthquake with a seismic intensity of 3.0 or more on Japanese earthquake scale is expected to occur.
It usually starts a countdown from ten to zero.
The sounds is so loud that it always scares me.
The other day, it said



"The earthquake is coming.       ZERO!"




Huh??!! Zero?!



I thought the epicenter was close to my place, and that there wasn't enough time for a countdown.




I hate earthquakes!

Giving an Apple

"Giving an apple to a teacher is a tired cliche."

This was used an example sentence

when I learnt the new word "cliche" the other day. 

I thought if apples can bring me a perfect score effortlessly, 

I have to scoop up apples!

After that, I found an article saying 

"Nowadays, some people give teacher ipad or ipad 

for students instead of apples. 

Oh, that makes sense!

About Tattoos in Japanese

It is well known in Japan that foreigners often get wrong or strange kanji tattoos on their body.
The strangest tattoos which I've ever seen are :
台所 (kitchen) 読書感想文 (a description of my impression after reading a book) and so on.

I laughed at a tattoo I saw last night for the first time in a while.
The man got his name tattooed in hiragana on his chest,
but the form of its hiragana is too terrible! It looks like as if a very small kid wrote it poorly.
みどり is green and his name, but it's usually a name for a girl in Japan.

Getting a wrong kanji tattoo is out of the question of course.
If people want to get a tattoo, I would strongly suggest to them that they should ask native people to check not only the spelling but also how beautiful the from is, before they do.

For your information.
In Japan, people who have tattoos are not allowed to go in a public hot spring and swimming pool because tattoos are still believed to be a symbol of Japanese Mafia.

It Was a Long Distance

I traveled through France and came back home. 

Thanks to this trip, I finally found the reasons why I like Paris and 

why the Mona Lisa is so popular around the world. 

I've been to Paris several times and seen the painting, Mona Lisa, a few times,

but I had never understood the reason until now.

It's a long story so I'll write about it next time. =)

When I'm depressed and want to smile, I sometimes watch funny videos.

My friend suggested using a Japanese anime with English subtitles to study English. It was a short anime, only 11 episodes. I picked up in it new words and new phrases I didn't know and made a list. After making a list, I noticed that it looks like lyrics of an unrequited love song.

I used some incompatible sentences in it by force, but I simply couldn't put these two sentences in the above list.

The Conversation That I heard at a Cafe

A woman who looked like she was around 25 years old was talking to her friend at a cafe.



"I don't know why I work for these days. Do I work for what? I'm afraid of getting old alone. 
I can't believe that I'll be able to meet a right person."


Listening to her, I agreed with her in my mind in the seat next to her. ahaha ^^;




Around 25 years old is pretty much advantage to know about that because of huge time left.

Or the thought may have nothing to do with ages and maybe people think like that at any ages.

I told my friend what I wrote about in my last entry and we got a question.

If you are in love with someone who loves someone else, 

can you still keep being his/her friend or

would you risk losing that friendship to go to the next level?

She said she would want to keep being someone's friend

even though the person doesn't love her. 

Hmmm.......

I feel if I maintain a friendship with someone,

I wouldn't be able to forget and would keep loving the person.

When I was looking up some things on the internet, 

I happened to find on Wikipedia the name of a friend 

I stopped seeing several years ago. 

He was talented, but I was surprised at how successful he has been. 

It seems he is just as talented as he used to be.

I thought that us remaining friends was not good for him for various reasons
and I stopped all contact with him.

I might be selfish, and now I somewhat regret ending our friendship.

I never knew he achieved such success.
His music was released in a few foreign countries!

The Folly

I've been too lazy to do anything recently..........



I actually had some free time to practice the flute, but I didn't play it enough because of my laziness so I had to read some music sheets on the train on my way to work. After a while, I realized that the train had already passed the station I was supposed to get off at.

 Since I had already missed my stop, I decided to return to my original station only after having lunch at a big station that has a lot of shops and restaurants. After work and when I was on my way home, I was exhausted and fell asleep on the train. So I missed my stop again!! When I opened my eyes, I didn't know where the train was running because the landscape was completely different from what I'm used to.

As I've written similar accidents before here, I sometimes have such events so I wasn't surprised what happened. I was more amazed at my foolishness.

In a Muddle

Since I had an extra job today, I woke up earlier than usual. While being half asleep and half awake, I was preparing for leaving and thinking that I have to leave by eight o'clock. The next moment, I turned pale because I realized that the job starts at eight! It wasn't the time which I have to leave. I was thinking 8 8 8 ....... so I misunderstood! Then, it had already passed seven o'clock. At this point, to be late for work was fixed. I was in a hurry, but I was thinking that the way of making out today's schedule is odd.


"Do I really have to leave at eight o'clock or does the job start at eight o'clock?"


I repeated this question some times in my mind in a few seconds. At that time, I couldn't remember I had my notebook soon. In the end, the job was supposed to start at nine o'clock and I didn't need to hurry. Moreover, I got a call from my boss before leaving and he said that the extra job was canceled besides the morning job. I'm in a muddle today.



I caught a cold a few days ago and now I'm enjoying my hoarse voice.

Overestimation!

I don't know why my boss chose me as the new member of a quartet.
She must have overestimated my ability.
There is definitely a huge difference in ability between the other members and myself.
Since I'm emotionally drained by stress, I feel like I want to change jobs.

To make things worse, I got a cold.

It's getting cold here in Japan. Take care of yourself!

No More Expectation

If I can't resolve my concern even after thinking very much, that is meaningless. 

That's why I stopped thinking about it!

Instead of that it's slowly dawning on me that 
I've been having my true feelings toward some things.

Her Intuition

I'm chronically sleep deprived and my complexion is annoyingly bad these days. -_-;


I had dinner last night with one of my friends who has a thing for cosmetics and fashion. She can always tell how I'm doing just by looking at the condition of my skin. The first words she said right after seeing me was "Are you okay? Are you busy these days?"

She doesn't know which cosmetics I use and one of them is running out, but almost as if she was watching my daily life, she just happened to give me the product that I needed. She's just generous like that sometimes. Her intuition is too much! I'm glad I have such a wonderful friend.^^

In order to fill out some documents for going to France, I took out my passport from its case for the first time in a year. I found a small piece of paper sandwiched between the pages. It had a handwritten e-mail address written on it. That reminded me of an old lady I met in Paris last year.

This is a tip which reminds him/her of you.

Dilemma

My boss asked me to join a new ensemble two months ago.

I had been busy and exhausted lately. 

Do you know the kanji for "busy"?

It's 忙しい which is composed of two parts. 

The left side is 心 which means "heart" and 

the right side is 亡くす which means "to lose". 

In Japanese, "busy" means to lose your heart.

I knew the kanji of course, but I just realised its meaning today.

I think its meaning makes sense.

My Days

My friend who could get some seats at a good position to see the fireworks invited me. It was really nice walking along a river to go to the seats, but then I thought that viewing the fireworks from a nearby skyscraper would be better. 

The Thing That People Forget

Before anything, people tend to forget the voice of a person whom they lost. I believed that my ears have quite good memory. At my friend's wedding party last year, a guy sitting next to me spoke to me.

"You must be Ari, right?"

"Eh?! Are you Sato? Your voice reminded me of who you are."


My close friend listening to our conversation said, "Voice? You met him for the first time in 10 years! Usually, appearance reminds you of who the person is. Ari, your memory circuits are very odd."

I can remember such the voice of a friend whom I don't care about, but I'm starting to forget the voice of my special person. That's too sad. What's going on in my memory circuits? I think I still have its memory, but I can't bring it out...

The Power of Words

I don’t know why, but one of my friends sometimes speaks to me quite timely when I'm depressed. When my dear person passed away and I was depressed last year, his words really really helped me. Last week when I got a slight problem, I expected his call a bit, then I got his call!! I’m wondering he might have a sixth sense because his help is always quite timely.

The words he says are not so different from other friend's one, but his words are deeply touching somehow. The impression of Japanese language you give to people are very different by changing the end of words. I think his Japanese sound is very soft.

He speaks Japanese fluently like a native speaker so when he suddenly speaks English, I say "Woww! You speak English too? You sounded like a native!" Like this, his Japanese is amazing. I wish my English improve as well as his Japanese level and help him in English when he is depressed. I've never seen him depressed though.

Unbelievably Cheap!

I found unbelievably cheap airline tickets on the website of Jetstar, the airline company. The cost for a one way ticket from Tokyo to Gold Coast, which is famous for its beautiful beaches in Australia, is only 6000 yen (about 76 American dollars.) This is cheaper than when I go back to my hometown from Tokyo!

My mother always says that such a cheap airline company may be dangerous and you shouldn't use them. She doesn't know that Qantas Airways, which has never had a fatal accident, established Jetstar.

When I used this airline company two years ago, the seat was small and not so comfortable, but I could keep still during the flight because it was so cheap!

This cost doesn't include the cost for blankets or food. When you use this kind of low-cost carrier, don't you forget you have to pay attention to rules which might be different from other airlines. Travelling abroad is cheaper than travelling domestically in Japan.

Nephew's Dream

The other day, I took two of my nephews to an amusement park where kids can experience various kinds of jobs. One of two nephews who is five years old chose a pilot and I asked wheter his dream is to become a pilot.

Me: Do you want to become a pilot in the future?
Him: No, I'm not interested in becoming a pilot. My dream is to fly without using an airplane.
Me: By yourself? Like a bird?
Him: Yes.
Me: Hmm..... Study hard!
Him: Yup! =)


I don't know how much five year old childrean understand about reality, but I think when I was around his age, I knew that humans can't fly. He was quite serious and looked like he has no doubt about that. I hope he is smart and could fly someday.

Why do talented people die so young?

The Most Shocking Movie Ever

I saw the movie, "Antichrist" in English late last night because my favorite French actress acted in it. The actress, Charlotte Gainsbourg, was amazing, but according to Wiki, at least four people fainted during the preview due to the film's explicit violence. The violent scenes were too strong and made me turn away my eyes in distaste so many times. I wanted to stop watching it, but I thought that stopping before knowing the end of the story might have made me feel bad so I decided to watch it until the end. In the end, the movie left me only something offensive. Whether I stopped seeing it in the middle or saw the entire story, the result was the same. This story is about a serious mental disease that passes my comprehension. 

After seeing it, I couldn't have normal mind for a while and tired to find my friends on Skype to distract myself while appreciating the time difference. That night, of all nights, I couldn't find any friends who were free.

She got a best actress award in Cannes Film Festival with this film and I'm a big fan of her, but I really regret seeing this movie. If you like the director, Lars von Trier, his taste and a horror film, you'll like it.

Calls From The Police

This is a story from last summer.

I got a voice mail from the police one afternoon. The officer said that my friend was arrested for a crime and mentioned my phone number, so the police needed me to call back.

What?!

My friend was arrested?!

After listening to it, I called back the police immediately. After I called the police, I learnt that the criminal had lied to the police officer, and he gave the false phone number to protect his friend. 

The second story is that my phone rang when I was practising music for an audition. The call was from the police again.

"Are you playing any musical instruments? A resident of your apartment was complaining about it. Could you stop? It is late."

It was already past 10:30 pm at that time. I had not noticed at all until then. Besides, my windows were opened. My apartment is unusual because a lot of musicians live there. There are two violinists, one saxophonist, one pianist and me. So most of residents of my apartment building are relatively tolerant of our playing music, but this time it was too late. 

I told this story to my musician friends and I learned that everyone has also received some complaints, especially piccolists!!

Japanese Lesson in The Middle of The Night

While choosing something to eat for dinner in the middle of last night at a convenience store, and with a quite serious look on my face, a non-Japanese spoke to me in Japanese. He seemed to have already spoken to me a few times.

"Excuse me, what's the meaning of this Japanese?"

He asked me, while he was pointing out a product,

"What about this?"

I wondered why he didn't look for it in a dictionary by himself, but it was a bit fun so I kept answering his questions for a while. Just like that, his Japanese lesson had started at a convenience store in the middle of the night. Looking at the food that I was holding, he asked,

"Are you going to start to eat all of them now?"


Then, I thought "What am I doing with a stranger at late night?! I should go home right now because I'm exhausted and want to eat dinner and sweets before it gets late." It was already late though. I stopped answering his questions mid-conversation, and I quickly bought my food and sweets and left. I chose to eat sweets over holding an interesting conversation. In the end, sweets were a superior choice to a nice guy for me.

Ecrire n'importe quoi est peut-être le meilleur moyen d'aborder les sujets qui comptent , d'aller au plus profond par le chemin le plus court ... on dira tous uniment ce qui passe par la tête ...au gré du souvenir ... la mémoire nous livre tout en désordre ... à tout moment de jour ..on imitera ce désordre ... Il n'y aura pas d'itinéraire précis dans l'exploration de notre passé et c'est ainsi que je vois les choses aujourd'hui ,6 juillet 2012. J'écris ceci vers la fin de l'après-midi. C'est le bon moment pour regarder par-dessus l'épaule et voir la journée, avant que la nuit ne vienne, parce que la nuit est un autre monde.

The Strange Radio Program

To improve my English, I sometimes listen to English radio programs. The program I listened to yesterday was strange because they were only talking about a barbecue. They introduced to listener's recipes and some good websites for it.

After listening a while, I checked the program's title and found it. It was BBQ. I thought I had been listening to a program from BBC. The accent of one of the radio personalities sounded British so I didn't doubt that it was from BBC. Since those letters were quite small on the list, I misunderstood BBC and BBQ. Is a barbecue so popular in America? It must be more popular than I expected.

A Friend of Mine was Taken Somewhere at Immigration

I went to Italy with my friend when I was a student.

After I passed through immigration, I was waiting for her to come through, but she was slow. Looking at her, I noticed that she seemed to be in trouble. The next moment, she was taken somewhere!!

The staff at immigration couldn't believe what she was saying. So they forced her to take a Japanese test to verify whether she is Japanese or not. She had to answer some very easy questions and write some easy words in hiragara and kanji such as 一 二 三.

After they found out she was Japanese, she was released. When I heard what happened there, I laughed out loud. What if you like someone who likes somebody else?

My Friend in a TV Show!!

I found that one of my musician friends appeared on a comedian's TV talk show the other day.
The comedian was  Sanma Akashiya!!!!!

I bet if you were living in Japan, you would be surprised to hear his name! I think people living in Japan for over a year must have definitely seen this comedian on TV.

In the TV show, she was just talking, not playing a musical instrument. I knew she sometimes appears on TV as a musician, but I usually don't watch TV so I didn't know what her latest job had been. She looked an actress rather than a musician.

I know it is the best way of acting of self-advertisement, but I'm wondering where she is heading to as a musician.
