Do You Like To Hug?

My friend brought me as a guest to a New Year's party which was held by her English teacher last month, because she knows that I study English.

I was talking with a foreigner about rambling topics like " Which do you like better, the New Year's party or the year end party?" This question was funny for Japanese. I think most Japanese people have never thought about it seriously. He left there for a while, and he was getting closer to me, raising his arms and saying "hey Ari~". Instinctively, I gave him high fives with my both hands to avoid a hug.
It seemed as if bears were fighting. I felt sorry for him after that.
After the party I heard that my friend was laughing inwardly at the scene from a short distance.

I manage to hug in business, but in private, I can't get used to hugging a person whom I met for the first time, because we don't have such a culture in Japan. I guess that there are a lot of woman like me in Japan, so even if someone avoids your hug, that person wouldn't mean to hurt you.

Have a nice weekend!
